Each Ethernet device using one or more of the Internet Protocols must have a network address that identifies it. This address is known as the IP address. It consists of 4 octets; an example IP address looks like - 192.168.1.240. Each device is allocated this by the network dynamically (when connecting to he system) or statically by a network engineer. Powerlink devices each generate an IP address automatically by using the Powerlink node address in the last octet and defaults for the first 3 octets. E.g. 192.168.1.240 is node address 240, the Powerlink manager node.
